Fitting a Ruff Wear harness on front leg dog amputees

My people just heard from Louise the Baker who has a three legged dog blog for Carver, her 12 1/2 year old colabshepradollie. She has the following question about the Ruffwear Harness

Ruff Wear Harness on Carver the Three Legged Dog I have a question about fitting the Ruff Wear harness on a front amp – my harness keeps swirling around his body. How do you keep yours fitted well on his body?

I just added this topic to the Tripawd Discussion Forums for others to comment on since this is all my people could think of saying…

Yes, the harness does have a tendency to slip around since my front leg is missing. They have come to realize, however, that this is primarily an aesthetic issue since they can still grab the handle and straighten it out when needed. But they are still always adjusting it!

They do suggest adjusting the front buckles so the neck strap is snug, but not too tight. This does help a bit, as does keeping the chest and belly straps snug, but again, not too tight.

Please join the forum discussion on this topic if you have any words of advice for Louise and Carver! We look forward to hearing from you.

  1. my 11 yr old golden “Maggie” is really having a ruff time walking. She is continually trying to put down her leg(front left) that is not their anymore. My question, untill her stiches come out in two days how can I best help her without chocking her by using her collar all the time? She has osteosarcoma and also, could I get some info on what best to fed her? I did get her the k-9 immunity. What are your thoughts on chemo? My oncologist and vet say either way it probably is 6-12 mos.

  2. Thanks for the comment Kathyann! Here’s what we tell everyone who buys a harness before their dog’s stitches are out …

We recommend not using the harness until the surgery has completely healed and stitches or staples are removed. We have heard of no specific cases where any harness has hampered healing, but we believe direct pressure from the straps may irritate the wound. Please consult your veterinarian with any concerns.

We suggest using a soft towel slung under the belly if additional support is required in the meantime. A reusable canvas shopping bag slit down the sides also makes a handy temporary sling.

You will find much more advice and help in the tripawd discussion forums that we alone can provide. Simply search for specific terms or start a new topic. You’ll be surprised how many comments you’ll receive from our growing community of member with cancer dogs. Be sure to check out our top ten questions and here’s the link to Jerry’s canine cancer diet and supplements.

We chose not to put Jerry through chemo therapy after his amputation since he was given only a few months to lived. We later gave him Cytoxan as part of his metronomic therapy, and he lived nearly two years. But remember, we are not vets and can only speak from our experiences with Jerry. All dogs are different.

  3. thankyou so much for your reply. I am going to measure Maggie today and order a harness. We are using a gro bag and that helps but we still have to pull on her colar to much. Have you used Blue Buffalo food? I am trying to get Maggie to eat science diet nd but she really hates it. I have looked at the ingredients and they seem to be similar. Any comments would be appreciated.
