Random Scenes from Bailey’s Amputation Recovery

While every cancer dog story is different, if anyone ever has any doubts about our amazing ability to recuperate from amputation and adapt to life on three legs, they need to check out Bailey’s story.

In early July, Bailey’s Mom, Debbie, wrote to Tripawds for advice in how to cope with her beautiful, 10 year-old Golden Retriever’s upcoming amputation. Bailey is a great swimmer, and had a previous ACL tear surgery in one of her legs. Her pawrents have recently moved to Richmond, Virginia, and had no one to ask for good veterinary advice or help about coping with cancer.

As always, the Tripawds community came through for Debbie and her family, with support and helpful tips.

My Visit to the Animal Acupuncture Doctor In Colorado

Many weeks ago, I hurt my knee somehow. Maybe I caught the frisbee one too many times, I don’t know. But now, my doctor thinks that I have a partial ACL tear, and she recommended acupuncture treatment to help me feel better. I know that I don’t like Tramadol, so I was willing to try anything, even getting pins stuck in my flesh.

When I first got cancer, my Mom kept putting Frontline on me, because we had ticks and fleas bad where we used to live. Even though she wondered if maybe that’s what caused my cancer in the first place, she was afraid that the diseases I could get from fleas would be far worse than the risk of getting sick from chemicals that are supposed to be “safe” for us.

Ever since my doctor told me I had a partial ACL tear, my people have been keeping me relatively confined. Or at least trying to! We’re only going on leashed walks, per doctor’s orders. Bummer.

Jerry Update: Metronomic Protocol is Working!

Well, it’s official: my metronomic protocol therapy is doing what it’s supposed to do.

Last week I saw Dr. Mullins one more time before leaving New Mexico, and she gave us the great news; the chemotherapy is doing its job, and has shrunk those nasty lung tumors by ten percent! We were really hoppy to hear that, especially because we are on the road again, this time in Colorado.

Maruk: Does This Look Like a Dog with Lung Mets?

I’ve just gotta share this story about my friend Maruk, from Cincinnati, Ohio.

Last December, Maruk joined the Tripawd club because of bone cancer. He had chemo, and all was good until late February, when he let out a loud cough.

Sadly, X-rays showed “blurry flakes of snow on a gray and black background,” his Mama Karen said.

Karen says in her April 1st Forums post, “All we kept hearing was how quickly the cancer spreads once it is in the lungs. Panic set in. We didn’t want our buddy in pain, so we began discussing euthanasia.

Thank goodness we snapped out of panic mode! Occasionally, we hear “the Cough”, but he is nowhere near ready to give up on life.”

Daisy: A Senior Gal Lives Her Golden Years on Three Legs

Many times, pawrents aren’t sure if they should go ahead with an amputation on their senior dog. Of course all situations are very different, and there are no right answers. Lots of things about the dog’s existing health issues need to be taken into consideration.

But when a senior dog with osteosarcoma is otherwise in fair health, amputation can immediately alleviate the pain from bone cancer. And despite surgery recovery time and a bit of a learning curve, living out life on three legs can be a true gift for older dogs.

“Its all about growing old together,” says my friend Sasha, dog mom of my special girl Lalla. “A senior dog needs gentle exercise . . . and a pain free life in the ‘golden years’ is the greatest gift you can give to your senior dog.”
